5G auction

5G spectrum auction updates and the Shortlist of bidders in India. Will this be combat that is aggressive? Will this signal a change for India?

What is 5G?

5G networks are cellular networks that divide service areas into small geographical units called cells. All 5G wireless devices in a cell communicate with a cellular base station using radio waves transmitted via fixed antennas on frequency channels designated by the base station. For Internet access, the base stations, known as geodes, are connected to telephone network switching centres and routers through high-bandwidth optical fiber or wireless backhaul lines. A mobile device switching from one cell to the next, like in other cellular networks, is seamlessly handed off to the current cell. 5G networks can handle up to a million devices per square kilometer, but 4G networks can support just one-tenth of that capacity.

The auctions would take place on the spectrum from 600MHz, 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz. According to Jefferies, Bharti Airtel Ltd is expected to focus on the 26 GHz, while he expects Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd to boost its spectrum in 800 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands. Analysts said that it appears that Reliance Jio and Bharti are bidding to acquire 100 MHz of the 3.5 GHz band, and Vodafone Idea is bidding for 50 MHz of all circles, with exceptions of C circles such as Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, northeast, and Odisha.

The 700-MHz band spectrum, considered crucial worldwide to cover other bands for 5G, will give one company a leg up on rivals, analysts said. Billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel led by Sunil Mittal, Vodafone Idea, and unit of billionaire Gautam Adani’s flagship Adani Enterprises are all competing for the right to bidding on the spectrum for 5G, which offers speeds that are around 10 times faster than 4G, zero-latency connectivity, and could allow billions of connected devices to share data in real-time. Adani Data Ltd., an arm of the Gautam Adani-controlled group Adani Data Ltd., is participating in the auction, which is offering 73 gigahertz of radiowaves at an estimated Rs 43,000 crore. In last year’s auction — which ran for two days — billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio picked up Rs 57,122.65 crore of the spectrum, Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel had bidden around Rs 18,699 crore, while Vodafone Idea bought Spectrum worth Rs 1,993.40 crore.

On Tuesday, the auctions four rounds were completed on day one, with the bids exceeding Rs 1.45 lakh crore for 5G airwaves by groups led by moguls Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Bharti Mittal, and Gautam Adani, and Vodafone Idea on day one of Vodafone Idea. The opening day of the biggest telecom auctions in the country ended with the biggest telecom companies buying spectrum for over Rs 1.45 trillion in various spectrum bands, including 5G. A total of 72 gigahertz of airwaves were to be bid on, with the participation of four entities — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Adani Data Networks, an affiliate of the Adani group. However, it makes sense, according to Jason Li, a research lead at IDC, given that companies have been making big acquisitions at early auctions of the 5G spectrum in the C-band (3.7GHz to 3.98GHz). In the report, Credit Suisse said that Adani Groups EMD indicates Adani Groups spectrum auction participation would primarily be limited to the 26GHz band, which is the least expensive band for business use cases.

5G Auction shortlist of bidders in India

India’s largest telecom operator, Reliance Jio Infocomm, has submitted a 14,000-crore EMD before the participation of Reliance Jio in the 5G auction. The Telecom Department (DoT) in India has confirmed it has received applications from Adani Data Networks, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone Idea, and Bharti Airtel to participate in the next 5G auction. Adani Data Networks Reliance Jio Infocomm Vodafone Idea Bharti Airtel Next 5G Auction. In India, the DoT has revealed that a spectrum auction scheduled to begin on 26 July could see an aggressive bidding process in certain frequency bands, which is likely with Gautam Adani-led Adani Data Networks, as well as incumbent players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel looking to cement its grip on the sector. The Indian government had earlier confirmed that the forthcoming 5G auction would be offering frequencies in 600MHz, 700MHz, 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 3300MHz, and 26GHz bands.
